CLEMSON UNIVERSITY FOOTBALL PROGRAM COVER COLLECTION

ABOUT THE DIGITAL COLLECTION

The Clemson University Football Program Cover Collection comes from the University Archives, and features 198 unique cover layouts of both home and away games. Typical of sports programs, these covers are the combined efforts of illustrators, graphic artists and printers that worked with the University Athletic Department to create these souvenirs, which contained biographical information on coaches and athletes, as well as statistical information about each team. While most programs in this collection are from home games, there are also some programs from away games and bowl games. The covers of these programs depict Clemson's Tiger mascot, caricatures of rival mascots, coaches, players, and game theme days.

Intercollegiate athletics were first played at Clemson Agricultural College in 1896, with football having been introduced by mechanical engineering professor and future Clemson president Walter Merritt Riggs, who coached the first Tiger athletic team in football. Since then, Clemson has enjoyed many successful seasons, having been represented in thirty-one bowl games over the years. This collection includes covers from programs ranging from 1927 to 1978, representing teams under coaches Josh C. Cody, Jess C. Neely, Frank Howard, Hootie Ingram, Red Parker, Charley Pell, and Danny Ford.

EQUIPMENT AND TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS

Items in the Clemson University Football Program Covers digital collection originate from the Clemson University Archives Athletic Department Records. In 2008 and 2009, staff in Clemson University Libraries Digital Initiatives scanned archival masters; from which JPG derivatives and basic Dublin Core metadata were created for the collection; the project went live in Fall 2009

Archival master TIFFs were scanned using a Kodak iQSmart scanner with oXYgen software at 600 dpi; 24-bit depth color; Adobe RGB 1998 color profiles. Adobe XMP technical metadata was added using Adobe Photoshop and/or Adobe Bridge; JHOVE (JStor/Harvard Object Validation Environment) was used for file validation and generation of NISO Z39.50 technical metadata in XML format. From these masters, access derivatives were generated with the following specifications: 250 dpi; 24-bit depth color; sRGB color profile; then loaded along with Dublin Core descriptive metadata into OCLC's CONTENTdm content management system.
